By Mira Chen — Fishing was the first hobby I actually enjoyed in Heartopia. It is also the one I wasted the most time on by fishing in the wrong places at the wrong times. I spent roughly 15 hours fishing across two accounts to figure out where each fish actually spawns. Here is what I found.

River Fishing: The Beginner’s Gold Mine
The river is your starting point and honestly it stays useful even at endgame. Why? Because river fish spawn 24/7 in any weather. No time restrictions, no weather conditions. Just cast and catch. I timed myself on my second account: the basic rod catches about one fish every 7 seconds in the river. That is roughly 8 fish per minute if you are locked in. 10 minutes of focused river fishing gives you about 80 fish. Cook them into dishes and you have roughly 1,600 gold from 10 minutes of work.
River fish are not fancy. Carp, Trout, Bass. But volume beats rarity for XP grinding. I leveled from 1 to 3 in about 40 minutes of pure river fishing.
Lake Fishing: Where the Money Starts
Lake access requires the Improved Rod (buy it from Pete at the river dock for roughly 500 gold once you hit fishing level 3). Lake fish sell for about double what river fish sell for, but they have time restrictions. I learned this the hard way when I spent an hour at the lake at 2 PM and caught almost nothing. Lake fish are most active between 6 AM and 11 AM, and again from 4 PM to 7 PM. Outside those windows, the spawn rate drops dramatically.
The lake is also where weather conditions start mattering. Foggy mornings at the lake produce species you will never see on clear days. I caught a rare Catfish during fog that sold for 800 gold cooked. Never saw it again for two weeks.
East Sea: The Big Leagues
You need the Professional Rod (roughly 2,000 gold, available at fishing level 6) to fish the East Sea effectively. The Professional Rod has a rare fish detection indicator — a small blinking light that tells you when something valuable is nearby. This indicator alone is worth the 2,000 gold price tag.
East Sea fishing during rain is the most profitable activity in the game outside of 5-star Strawberry Jam. On one particularly good rainy day, I caught 4 rare fish in about 25 minutes. Cooked, they sold for a combined 4,800 gold. That is almost 200 gold per minute of fishing.
The catch: East Sea fish have the strictest conditions. Some only spawn during storms. Some only at night. Some only during specific seasons. You cannot casually fish the East Sea and expect results. You plan around it.
Weather Strategy (The Rule I Live By)
I check the weather forecast every single morning. It takes 5 seconds. It determines my entire day.
Rain? I drop everything and fish. All day. The garden can wait. Resident Requests can wait. Rain unlocks rare fish across all three fishing locations, and rainy days are too rare to waste on anything else.
Storm? These are extremely rare, maybe once every 2-3 weeks in-game. Storm-exclusive fish are among the most valuable items in the entire game. I once caught a Storm Tuna that sold for 2,500 gold cooked. I have seen exactly one storm in my 340 hours. Do not miss it.
Clear weather? Standard fishing is fine but not urgent. Use clear days for gardening, bug catching, and Resident Requests.
Fog? Lake fishing. Fog-exclusive species only appear at the lake.

Do I need bait? No. Bait exists in the game but the catch rate improvement is marginal (maybe 10-15% faster). Not worth the gold early on. I fished for 200+ hours without bait and did fine.
What time of day is best for fishing? Morning (6 AM – 11 AM) for lakes. Afternoon (12 PM – 4 PM) for rivers. Rain any time for the East Sea. Night fishing (after 6 PM) for nocturnal species only.
