By Mira Chen — Your fishing rod determines everything: what fish you can catch, how fast you catch them, and whether you notice rare spawns before they disappear. Here is every rod, what it actually does, and when to upgrade.
Rod Upgrade Path (Tested)
Basic Rod (free): River only. About 7 seconds per catch. Use this for your first 40 minutes of fishing to hit level 3. Do not spend gold upgrading earlier.
Improved Rod (~500G): River + Lake. About 5 seconds per catch. Buy this at level 3. The lake access alone is worth it — lake fish sell for roughly double river fish prices.
Professional Rod (~2,000G): All locations. Rare fish detection indicator (a small blinking light). This is the most impactful upgrade in the game. The indicator alone caught me 3 rare fish I would have missed on my first day using it.
Master Rod (~5,000G): Maximum speed, double catch chance on event fish. This is a luxury. The Professional Rod handles 90% of fishing needs. Buy the Master Rod only when you have everything else you want.
